3 Tips to Choose Better Food for You & Your Family

Ever since becoming a mom, I have been making small efforts on a regular basis to choose the most organic or "greener" options.

While caring for my son's wellbeing, it has opened my own eyes in regards to my own health and why I should care about the products that I personally use. Specifically, what my family and I eat is one area that I usually won't skimp out on when it comes to becoming healthier and more organic.

How many of your mommies shop at Target? I can see the abundance of hands starting to pop up right away, mine being one of them. Well, I would love to introduce you to the Made to Matter collection, handpicked by Target. The collection began last year when consumers were hoping for a larger selection of natural, organic, and sustainable products because, let's face it, it is not easy to find some organic brands readily available!

The collection focuses on better choices for you, your family, and your world and features various brands that you're probably familiar with such as KIND, Annie's, and Seventh Generation.

In the collection, there are highly smart food choices that have become a staple for my family, especially for my 17 month old son. I strive to give him the most natural foods possible and if something has to be packaged, I want it to be as healthy as it can be. That is why I love the brand Ella's Kitchen, which is in the Made to Matter collection. Specifically, Greyson loves nibbling on Ella's Kitchen Organic Milk & Vanilla Baby Cookies. Since these cookies fit conveniently inside my purse and diaper bag, they are my first option to take with us while on-the-go. They are also the perfect shape and size for little toddler hands!

When it comes to what I eat, I try not to skimp out as well! For example, I am a HUGE cereal nut. With all of the many brands that are available, it is hard to pick the right one. Most cereals on the market are filled with endless amounts of sugar and additives. However, you will almost always catch me eating Cascadian Farms Organic Cereal.

No matter what we choose to eat, there are a few things that are for certain. We want natural, organic, and whole foods that are better for us and our family.

Here are 3 tips to helping you choose better food for you and your family:

1. Look for the USDA Organic seal. When in doubt over what's organic and what's not, always look for the USDA Organic seal. This seal helps consumers to recognize easily from a glance whether a product is considered organic. The seal is placed on the very front of every product packaging. For fresh produce, look for the seal placed on the product signage. The seal is green and brown or black and white and when you see this seal, you know the product is at least 95 percent organic.

2. Read the ingredient labels carefully. The ingredient listing will tell you everything that you need to know. When eating healthier, it is best to choose the food in its most natural state. For example, the least amount of ingredients, the better for you. Also, steer cleer from ingredients and chemical names that you are having difficulty pronouncing as these are most likely additives, preservatives, or coloring added to your foods.

3. Look for additional labeling or seals. Either on the front or the back of the product, the labeling might even go one step further to help you choose the best product for you and your family by adding additional seals such as Vegan, Non-GMO, GF (Gluten-Free), and Fair or Direct Trade. These seals will help you distinguish certain products to help suit your needs or concerns!

If you are having issues finding any of the following tips, try heading to Target and browsing the Made to Matter collection. It will have just what you are looking for!
